Port Ellen Distillery on Islay was founded in 1825, closed by Diageo in 1983 and demolished except for its maltings, which continue to supply malt to other Islay distilleries. Its remaining stocks became legendary — among the world's most sought-after and expensive whiskies — before the distillery was painstakingly reconstructed by Diageo and reopened in 2023. The new Port Ellen releases a peated, coastal single malt in strictly limited quantities, with each bottle commanding extraordinary interest from collectors.
