About
Port Ellen Distillery, located on the south coast of Islay, was founded in 1825. A pioneer in the whisky industry, it was one of the first distilleries to export whisky to America and to use a spirit safe. The distillery closed in 1983 but is currently undergoing a major restoration and expansion, with production expected to resume in 2024.
