Mizunara Virgin Oak Cask

Sour / Wild Ale

Annandale is the first and only distillery to offer Mizunara casks for private purchase, marking a groundbreaking moment in whisky maturation. These rare casks are sourced in small quantities from the sustainably managed, ancient forests of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture. Mizunara oak trees require at least 200 years to mature before they can provide sufficient length between knots to create full cask staves. Known as the ‘Water Oak’ due to its tight grain and highly porous nature, Mizunara allows whisky to penetrate deep into the wood, drawing out complex and distinctive flavors. Mizunara oak imparts an exotic character to Annandale’s fruit-forward whisky. Expect warming spices like sandalwood, cinnamon, and clove, alongside delicate notes of coconut, mango, and hints of citrus, all beautifully complementing Annandale’s signature malty sweetness. Mizunara oak casks remain incredibly scarce and have traditionally been available only through closed competitive auctions. Their rarity, craftsmanship, and distinctive maturation properties make these casks an extraordinary and exclusive choice for whisky connoisseurs.
