Volunteer Days at Daws Hill Vineyard

Daws Hill Vineyard
Daws Hill Vineyard· Winery, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire

There may not be a harvest this year after the devastating spring frosts, but the vineyard still needs plenty of love. Our current mission is taking on the blackthorn that’s been running riot through the vines. It’s not the most glamorous vineyard job, but it’s one of the most important! Every thorn we clear helps keep the vineyard healthy and ready for next season. These sessions are definitely on the active side. Expect plenty of bending, crouching and working close to the ground, so they’re best suited to those with a good level of mobility and fitness. You’ll earn your lunch! We’ll meet at 9:30am for tea, coffee and a quick briefing before heading out into the vineyard together. We’ll work through the morning, stopping for a delicious home-made lunch (included, of course). If the weather is anything like it has been recently, we’ll probably call it a day after lunch before the afternoon heat really sets in. Volunteering is about far more than just the work. It’s a chance to spend a morning outdoors, learn a little about how a working vineyard is cared for, chat with like-minded people and become part of the Daws Hill community. Whether you’re a regular or it’s your first visit, everyone is welcome. Old clothes, sturdy footwear and plenty of enthusiasm are all you need—we’ll provide the tools, the tea and the lunch!

40th Anniversary Celebration Picnic

Warden Abbey Vineyard
Warden Abbey Vineyard· Winery, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire

Warden Abbey Vineyard sits on the site of the Little Vineyard, which was cultivated by the Cistercian monks of Wardon Abbey. The monastery was closed and dismantled in the mid-16th century and the land purchased by brewer and MP Samuel Whitbread in 1786. The vineyard we know today as Warden Abbey Vineyard was replanted exactly 200 years later by Lady Whitbread with the help of the late Derek Smedley MW. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the modern vineyard we’re inviting volunteers, friends and family to join us for a picnic and a glass of one of our current sparkling wines. There’s no charge, come and have some fun in the vineyard and meet fellow friends and volunteers who have helped keep the vineyard thriving as a Community Project despite the weather, a pandemic and the many challenges of English viticulture. Bring a picnic, we’ll supply a glass of fizz. just let us know how many adults are coming, bring the children or grandchildren too …

Create Your Own Sparkling Wine with Holly

Daws Hill Vineyard
Daws Hill Vineyard· Winery, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire

Join Holly, our winemaker, for a unique, hands-on sparkling wine experience where you’ll craft a bottle tailored entirely to your taste. You’ll begin by exploring how you personally experience flavour and aroma, discovering how sugar (dosage) transforms the character of sparkling wine. Through guided tastings, you’ll test different levels of dosage and decide whether your perfect style is Brut, Extra Brut, Sec, or Demi-Sec . Once you’ve chosen your preferred sweetness level, you’ll complete the final stages of traditional sparkling wine production: Freeze the neck of the bottle Remove the ice plug (disgorgement) Add your chosen dosage Cork and finish your very own bottle Your unique sugar preference will be recorded, so you can reorder your personalised recipe anytime in the future. £100 per bottle (Book per bottle, not per person — perfect for solo guests or pairs.) Price includes your custom bottle of sparkling wine to take home.
